At what age should we teach our child a second language?

My husband’s family speaks Mandarin primarily and they would like our child to learn how to speak Mandarin. The baby will be born in August and I am currently in the process of trying to learn myself but I still have a long way to go. I don’t want my husband and his family to teach the baby Chinese and I won’t be able to share in some of his first words. Do we need to teach the baby his primary language first and then work on adding Chinese in later?
