How did you learn Chinese (Mandarin)? SELF STUDY?

I took a class but that was for one sem. I believe that I have enough initiative to learn it by meself.
HOW did you learn? Ho you have any tips? Sites? Books?
Or Do I really need an instructor? 🙂
