Do all Chinese normally do this? Do they normally speak Mandarin to leave people out of a conversation?

I have a friend who is from Taiwan, he is a cool guy, but the thing is when he is around his other Chinese or Taiwanese friends, he automatically starts speaking Chinese (Mandarin)… I then am left out of the conversation and feel sort of as is I am excluded …
