how do you write 'hours' in mandarin?

I am wondering how someone would write ‘hours’ and ‘minutes’ abbreviations in Chinese…and Japanese for that matter.

Would 5 h 16 m or 5 hr 16 min be understood? If not what should I use for these characters first in Chinese and if you know in Japanese?
