If a person wants to learn Chinese, should they learn Cantonese or Mandarin?

And what’s the difference? Which is the most widely-spoken? Which is the most useful? Thanks.

I read somewhere that in twenty or thirty years there will only be two languages that you need to know, English and Chinese. But I can’t remember if it was Cantonese or Mandarin.
I read some stuff on the Internet about the difficult of learning Chinese. It seems awesomely complicated, and apparently even native Chinese people sometimes don’t know the written characters. So maybe I’ll leave it for my next life and learn Spanish instead 🙂

Thanks to everyone who answered!
