I’ve done research but I can’t find the answers to a few questions. How old exactly is mandarin? Was it derived from cantonese? Was it created specifically by the officials in Beijing as an artificial language or did it evolve naturally from an older Beijing dialect? Did old Mandarin have more than 4 tones? Any insight you can provide me will be greatly appreciated.
