Why do a lot of people who speak Cantonese/Mandarin add “le” and “la” to their sentences?

And sometimes it’s leh and lah. Is it something with the pronunciation of the language or something like that?
Just to add on to this, is it kind of like when native Japanese speakers speak English they add extra "ahs" and "oos" to English words?
