Do all Chinese normally do this? Do they normally speak Mandarin to leave people out of a conversation?

I have a friend who is from Taiwan, he is a cool guy, but the thing is when he is around his other Chinese or Taiwanese friends, he automatically starts speaking Chinese (Mandarin)… I then am left out of the conversation and feel sort of as is I am excluded from the group.

Do they do this automatically without them realizing that they are being rude or impolite? Or do they feel more comfortable and feel like its easier to speak to them in Chinese?

I am Mexican, I am fluent in English and Spanish, but I only speak in Spanish to another Mexican (or Latino) when I know they don’t know much English.

But then again

I don’t think Chinese people are known for being polite.
