I'm going to China and want to learn a little Chinese – Should I learn Mandarin or Cantonese?

What’s the difference between Mandarin and Cantonese? I’ll be going to Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi’an.
Just a few phrases and some numbers . . . nothing big.
