Can any Chinese speakers write "I wish I shared the same confidence as you" in Mandarin Chinese? And please, no Google translate. 🙂

Thanks In advance.

Are the second-language Mandarin speakers in China?

Can someone explain please? Because if Mandarin is all concentrated in one country, why are a fourth of its speakers second-language speakers?
thanks in advance!!

How should I learn vocabulary?

I’m currently teaching myself Mandarin Chinese.
I have an electronic dictionary and it’s very useful, i’m just not sure that using the "common words" section of the dictionary is going to produce the results I need to learn this language.
So, what is the best way to learn vocabulary? Should i continue doing what i’m doing, or do you have a better suggestion?
Thanks in advance!

I’m looking to buy a good Mandarin karaoke DVD for my dad, who is 57. He was born and raised Taiwan and moved here to the US 26-27 years ago. He loves singing karaoke so I thought a new karaoke DVD might make a good gift. He loves the classics, and the usual Chinese music typical 57-year-olds would like (though, please remember that he’s from Taiwan and not China). I can speak Mandarin, but I can’t read or write Chinese, and I was born and raised in the US, so I haven’t a clue which artists are famous, which songs are classics, or anything else, really. I was browsing eBay and found a few that looked promising, but have no idea if the artists or songs are known. I’ve gathered up some photos of one of the DVDs I’m interested in (including the song list). Can someone please take a look and let me know what you think? Any help would be appreciated.

Want to learn Cantonese/Mandarin?

I want to learn either Catonese or Mandarin, but I don’t know which class to take. I live in New England, close to NY where I’ve hear many people speak Cantonese, but more people speak Mandarin, but that’s in China. I’m not going to China any time soon, but I want to know which language would be better in the long run. I have lots of time on my hands, I’m 13 and and it’s summer. When school starts I might do one other activitiy, so I haveas much time as I need. If there are any books or websites you recommened too that would be good!
Thanks in advance!
Lauren

Can anyone suggest some Chinese websites where I would be able to find movies, audiobooks, lectures… anything really – to get used to the way it sounds.

Actually, if you could suggest some kid websites that would be great too!

I already have learning materials, but as I said – I want to get used to hearing the sounds of the language.

Thanks in advance!

Chinese (Mandarin) dialogue help?

Hi, I’m taking Chinese III and we’re using the New Practical Chinese Reader II. I’m trying to figure out what the following dialogue means. The two characters who are speaking are 林哪 (Lin Na) and 马大为 (Ma Da Wei). Looking at the dialogue, I think they are talking about another character, 宋华 (Song Hua). Correct me if I’m wrong. Please also correct my translations and fill in the stuff I don’t know, especially the translation of the first part of Ma Da Wei’s dialogue (before the first comma). Thanks in advance!

马大为: 刚才宋华来了,他也问我,林娜去哪儿?
林哪: 我给宋华写信了, 他怎么不知道? 他现在在哪儿?
马大为: 他回宿舍了。

Translation
Ma Da Wei: [not sure about the first part before the comma], he also asked me, "Where has Lin Na gone?"
Lin Na: I have sent Song Hua a letter, how did he not know [where I have been]? Where is he now?
Ma Da Hui: He has returned to the dormitory.

One more question: Is Lin Na wondering if Song Hua moved and the letter perhaps did not reach him? Is Ma Da Hui confirming this?
Okay, thank you so far! I understand the first part now. But did Lin Na help Song Hua write the letter, or did Lin Na write a letter to Song Hua? I think it’s actually the latter, because the exact, word-by-word translation is "I have given Song Hua written letter." What do you think?
The person who said the former just deleted their answer for some reason…but I would still like to know what the correct translation is. 🙂

Thanks to Darkest Lights! You were very helpful.

Chinese word pronunciation help?

I’m a beginning student of Mandarin Chinese and am running into a disagreement with a friend over proper pronunciation. I always thought the word hen3 很 rhymes with the English word "fun," with the e pronounced like a deep "uh" in the throat. However my buddy thinks it sounds like the English word "hen." What is the correct way? I’m mainly interested in how it would be properly said in Beijing. Thanks in advance.

What's the best way to learn Mandarin Chinese on your own?

Hi, I am a college student, and I am almost done with my second semester of Mandarin Chinese. I really love it and want to learn more and hopefully become fluent some day.

Unfortunately, I won’t have time any more during college (except maybe summer of 2009) to take Chinese classes. That still leaves at least a year not taking Chinese class.

What is the best way to learn Chinese on your own? Should I buy the textbooks of the classes I can’t take and do them myself? Should I buy a computer program? Books from the bookstore? Should I watch Chinese TV? Listen to Chinese music? All of the above? More?

Haha, let me know! I really want to learn! Thanks in advance!

in Shanghai, what language do they speak?

do they speak mandarin or cantonese? I am from the UK and have absolutely no idea which of these languages is spoken most of in shanghai.

Thanks in advance

Because I’m white and speak fluent English and Spanish…but in my Mandarin class everyone else is Cantonese (and one is something similar…) Anyways…it seems that it is 100 times easier for them to pick up Mandarin than it is for me…They consider studying a lot to be 3 hours. Studying a LITTLE for me is less than 10 hours. :/
And in that 3 hours they will learn an entire chapter or two…
and I’ll learn maybe 10 characters…and not even the sentence structure.
I hosted a Chinese exchange student when I was in high school and she spoke Mandarin and told me that the sentence structure was similar to English…but it seems OPPOSITE. :/
And my Cantonese boyfriend understands Mandarin.
Ummm…so yea…I’m just curious…*___*
Thanks in advance! =)

I am fluent in both English and Mandarin Chinese, I can both translate/speak and write. Thanks in advance.

Learn Mandarin – ad in National Geographic?

Hi, two part question:

Has anyone learned Mandarin via CD-ROMs? No class instruction. Can one actually do that and do authentic chinese people actually understand you without problems?

Does someone have experience using that ‘learn languages’ program, the ad which is always in National Geographic (sorry don’t remember the name of the ad)? Is it worth the money? Does anyone know the name of the company of the ad which I am talking about?

thanks in advance

I Need to Learn Mandarin and and Vietnamese.?

english to mandarin translation?

how did i say,

i want to sleep.

please spell it for me n dont type some chinese character.

thanks in advance.

My 4 y.o. son and I are learning Mandarin through Rosetta Stone, but we are practicing Traditional writing and calligraphy. Is this a waste of time?
I understand that through learning traditional, I can eventually learn Simplified. I’m not sure when we will ever get to China and there are no local Chinatowns near us, so still not sure if I should learn to speak Mandarin or Cantonese. Most of the books and resources seem to be in Simplified from catalogs and websites.
I just want to know the best way to go about learning Chinese without wasting time, money and effort.
Thanks in advance!

as in, for the majority of the great wall. I am adding a pic of the great wall on a website, and I have the choice of putting it on a mandarin page or a cantonese page. i want to know where it would be more relevant.

Thanks in advance
i dont know why cantonese would be spoken in the north – I am from the UK so I am asking your advice!!

How can I write my name, Amjad, in Chinese characters?

My Name has 2 syllables, "Am-" which sounds like the first 2 letters from "Um-brella" . And Jad, the A sounds like the A in "Bad".

Thanks in advance!

Simple Mandarin Translation?

How do you say, "Sorry for replying so late" or anything in that likeness. I need a native speaker to help me as I don’t trust google translate or other online translators. Thanks in advance!

Easy 10 points. I need to literally write "Family Tree" But can’t find anything on google.

Also, if there is (i’m not sure) and simplified version, that would help (: thanks in advance.

English to Mandarin Translation?

Im trying to figure out how No Limit Soldier would be look in Mandarin. Could it be translated to english a couple ways?

Unlimited, no limit, beyond limit… are these all the same in mandarin? Also, what about warrior and soldier? are these the same in written form?

I need the written form of No limit soldier, and no limit warrior, thanks in advance!
also,…. im really wondering in particular about the ordering of the characters… and how htey are connected…

Is it… Soldier of no limit? or Warrior of no limit?
That seems hte be the more correct order

I’m just curious, because when the Japanese borrowed that word into their vocabulary, it became "kanji." Was the "h" more gutteral maybe (so as to be confused with the "k" sound), and the "i" more like an "ee" sound, at that time? I realize this is a very specific question I’m asking, but I’d love to know.

Thanks in advance!

My (Canadian) mother is currently living in China and is trying to learn to speak Mandarin. She is taking classes to learn it and is finding it difficult.

Do you have any tips I could give her to learn it more quickly and easily? She has been feeling discouraged at times.

Thanks in advance.
