Question says it all. I use Pinyin b/c it is now a standardized spelling, even in Taiwan, but I’ve heard others say that the older Wade-Giles version is actually closer to Mandarin Chinese pronunciation. Is that true?

Do the people in Taiwan speak Mandarin Chinese?

If you speak Mandarin Chinese, can you go to Taiwan and be mutually understood by them? I’ve heard many different things, and I’m really curious about what they speak there.

originally came from south of Fujian? does it mean even the aboriginal Taiwanese were also mainland Chinese? does it mean Taiwan has always been part of China? let alone the 3 million people that KMT took to Taiwan that Chiang didn’t kill all speak mandarin also. Please enlighten me.
i do have a cantonese friend here, her mother speaks minnan so she also speaks minnan dialect, she told me in parts of Taiwan people speak minnan, what does it mean?

Questions-

1. I’m Chinese and my parents are Chinese. They say they’re from mainland China.. But what exactly is mainland China? Beijing, Shanghai.. Guangzhou, ect. ect.?

2. My Mandarin teacher at school is Taiwanese and she has an accent. She said she learned how to write in both traditional and simplified. Do all Taiwanese citizens learn both forms?

3. What do Taiwanese people speak, if they aren’t speaking Mandarin? Are they local dialects or do they have one, unified language with a name?

4. Does Taiwan have a different/separate pinyin system than China? My Taiwanese Mandarin teacher is spelling all the pinyin incorrectly and it’s really getting on my nerves, but I don’t want to call her out.. Is she following her own country’s pinyin system? Or is she simply bullshitting on the board?

I want to learn Mandarin…?

My parents are Taiwanese and speak Mandarin to each other but I only speak English because they never wanted to teach me Mandarin or send me to Chinese school. Now they complain about how I can’t speak Mandarin and can only mostly-understand it! Ugh. Anyways, I love Taiwan and have always wanted to learn Mandarin. Do you think its too late to learn Mandarin at age 15-ish? And do you have any strategies or tips on learning it? Thanks!

PS- Do my parents have to be very involved? I’m scared that I’ll butcher the language and embarrass myself…

I’m looking to buy a good Mandarin karaoke DVD for my dad, who is 57. He was born and raised Taiwan and moved here to the US 26-27 years ago. He loves singing karaoke so I thought a new karaoke DVD might make a good gift. He loves the classics, and the usual Chinese music typical 57-year-olds would like (though, please remember that he’s from Taiwan and not China). I can speak Mandarin, but I can’t read or write Chinese, and I was born and raised in the US, so I haven’t a clue which artists are famous, which songs are classics, or anything else, really. I was browsing eBay and found a few that looked promising, but have no idea if the artists or songs are known. I’ve gathered up some photos of one of the DVDs I’m interested in (including the song list). Can someone please take a look and let me know what you think? Any help would be appreciated.

Mandarin of Beijing vs. Mandarin of Taipei?

So today we’re basically comparing the Mandarin Chinese language as spoken (and written) in mainland China vs. Taiwan.

I understand mainland China uses simplified characters while Taiwan uses traditional characters.

Native Mandarin speakers, please consider the following aspects:
– grammar
– pronunciation/accent
– spelling rules (besides the simplified vs. traditional characters)
– vocabulary
– expressions (e.g. slang, etc.)
– usage

On a scale of 0 to 100 (0 being totally different languages like Swedish vs. Vietnamese, 100 being exactly identical), how close is the Mandarin language of mainland China to that of Taiwan?

Thank you.

im learning mandarin chinese, but not learning the standard characters. im learning the traditional characters, because my boyfriend is taiwanese, and one day when we can speak it fluently we plan to go to taiwan. but sume people keep saying that not all taiwan speaks mandarin, and some of the words have different accents. im a bit confused on that part… cus now i dont know if i need a mandarin phrase book, or a taiwanese phrasebook. but im learning mandarin chinese(traditional) from rosetta stone, and sumetimes get a bit confused sense there is no glossary or dictionary, can someone help me please, i dont know if i made the right disition to learn mandarin chinese(on a count of some ppl said that in sume places in taiwan they speak different language)

Taiwan has its own military, its own legal system, its own currency, its own political parties, its own elections, it issues its own visas and passports, and in addition to speaking Mandarin, many Taiwanese also speak a dialect not spoken in mainland China.

So what is up with people not thinking that it is its own independent country?

How to process my first home buying in CA?

I come from Taiwan one year ago. I’m living in Tracy CA and want to move into Fremont CA. Who can tell me how to process my first home buying? Or which consultant that can speak mandarin I can ask for help?

Taiwan used to have their own dialect of Taiwanese Hokkien(Min Nan).

1. When and why did Mandarin(Putonghua) become a dominant language in Taiwan?

2. Do the older generations in Taiwan still speak Taiwanese Hokkien better than Mandarin?

3. How well do the younger generations in Taiwan speak Taiwanese Hokkien? Do they learn Taiwanhua at school?

I hope to move there one day, but for now i am focused on finishing school in America. I am a Taiwanese person, i cant read it but can somewhat speak mandarin. When i finish school i hope to work here for a couple of years then if i can move to Taiwan and find work there. Can i get a job there with just english? Would i need to learn to read and speak better?
How many years of experience would i need?

What's the best way to learn Mandarin Chinese?

Well, I’m a high school student and most likely won’t be able to visit China any time soon, so what are other ways I can learn?

Are there any websites/programs out there that have native speakers say something?
Also, what is the best way to memorize characters. I’m having a hard time remembering how to write them.

Should I learn simplified Mandarin and traditional? I want to visit China in the future. Are there any benefits to learning both? From what I understand, Traditional is only used in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Thank you :))

How long does it take to Learn Mandarin Chinese?

I can practice anywhere from half-hour to an hour a day. I have no Chinese friends, but do get along w/ Chinese people. I want to live in Taiwan in 3/4 years.

Also, i want to know mandarin on a just speaking fluently level, not characters…

I already know pronunciation of hanyu pinyin, i’ve mastered the tones, and I am starting the grammar.
I have been to chinatown 4 times, and they said my pronunciation was very good. I don’t know exactly how fast I learn.

I have to teach myself. I’m on a tight budget. To hear other ppl speak mandarin, I have to go on YouTube and watch the news from Taiwan, or my favorite Taiwanese drama, Fated to Love You.

Also, if you could give me some advice on moving to Taiwan, that would be EXTREMELY helpful.

Thank You,

Kaohsiung_Michigan

Can someone help with the pronunciation?

This is a song in CHinese.

I know how to pronounce it in MANDARIN, but not in HOKKIEN (which is the local dialect in Taiwan.)

Can someone please write down using English letters the Hokkien pronunciation of this song?

First to do so gets 10 points, thanks!

曲﹕鄧雨賢
詞﹕李臨秋

獨夜無伴守燈下 春風對面吹
十七八歲未出嫁 看著少年家
果然漂緻面肉白 誰家人子弟
想要問伊驚呆勢 心內彈琵琶

想要郎君做尪婿 意愛在心內
等待何時君來採 青春花當開
聽見外面有人來 開門甲看覓
月娘笑阮憨大呆 被風騙不知

where is it best to learn mandarin for 1 month?

well i’m planning to go to china/hk/taiwan for like a month to learn mandarin but i wanna go there during the may to june season for a month during the beginning of my summer. I was wondering where you think it would be best to go and try to learn it. I know that this is a short period and i do not intend to be totally fluent in it, but at least i’d like to order at a restuarant and etc. Have any suggestions for programs? so far the only one i’ve found is https://www.centerforstudyabroad.com/hongkong.html where i study in hk, dunno if that is good or not considering they mainly speak canto there.

btw, i would like to go to taiwan to learn mandarin, but can’t find any good services that look commendable. any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks

My girlfriend is a native Mandarin speaker (traditional characters … from Taiwan). We are moving to San Francisco together. I want to buy her a good map/guide book of the city in her native language, but I can’t read or speak it, so the Chinese bookstores are impossible for me to navigate. Can somebody point me to a good one. A link to a store to buy it would be ideal.

I’m planning to live in Taiwan for a year, and I’ve signed up to take Mandarin Chinese at my university, but I want to make sure this will be beneficial to me? How vast are the differences in speech and writing?

What language do they speak in Taiwan?

What language is the most commonly spoken language in Taiwan?

From my understanding, Mandarin(Putonghua) is the only official language in Taiwan.
But which language do Taiwanese mostly speak at home with family and friends in everyday life?
Is it Mandarin(Putonghua), Min Nan/Hokkien(Taiwanhua) or Hakka?

Also, is it true that most older generations in Taiwan speak fluent Japanese?

Thank you for your answer, I thought Taiwan had their own language called taiwanese lol i did not know they spoke mandarin. is it a different version of mandarin, or just mandarin?
oh and do Signapore have their own Mandarin dialect, or is it just plain Mandarin? thanks!

These two Brazilians are pretty hot and speak perfect mandarin:

There’s also several Brazilians on the Taiwanese show, WTO. A talk show with female expats around the world in Taiwan.

Of course, there is Akemi, the super hot Japanese/Brazilian model.

I’m wondering why there are so many Brazilians or Latin Americans in Taiwan.

My parents are from Taiwan, so I go to Taiwan a lot. I know Taiwan uses mostly traditional, but I think traditional is on the decline since China teaches mostly simplified, and China has more influence. So I’m learning simplified right now. What do you think?
