I want to learn Mandarin. Help?

Hi, well I am half Chinese. My mom is from Hong Kong and so I never have been exposed to the Mandarin language. I only have some knowledge of Cantonese, but I cannot speak it, I only understand it and that’s it.

I want to learn Mandarin, but what is some way to learn it? Also when people say they teach Mandarin, or some software that teaches Mandarin – do they just teach Standard Mandarin spoken in Beijing? Is there much difference between Beijing Mandarin and Shanghai Mandarin? Is it true that the Standard Mandarin that is spoken in Beijing is taking over in other regions and so the other dialects of Mandarin that are spoken in places like Suzhou, Shenzhen, etc. are not being spoken that much anymore by the young people living there?

How difficult is Mandarin to learn when comparing it to Indo-European languages such as French or English? And also what do you think is the most difficult thing about learning Mandarin? Are there any complicated things about how the language is structured?
Oh and also, how similar are Cantonese and Mandarin? Seeing as I can understand Cantonese, could that mean I would be able to understand a bit of Mandarin? Would it make it easier to learn the language?

Mandarin of Beijing vs. Mandarin of Taipei?

So today we’re basically comparing the Mandarin Chinese language as spoken (and written) in mainland China vs. Taiwan.

I understand mainland China uses simplified characters while Taiwan uses traditional characters.

Native Mandarin speakers, please consider the following aspects:
– grammar
– pronunciation/accent
– spelling rules (besides the simplified vs. traditional characters)
– vocabulary
– expressions (e.g. slang, etc.)
– usage

On a scale of 0 to 100 (0 being totally different languages like Swedish vs. Vietnamese, 100 being exactly identical), how close is the Mandarin language of mainland China to that of Taiwan?

Thank you.

Sources in Linyi City and its surrounding counties claimed that up to 120,000 women had been coerced into submitting to the procedures. I want to communicate this news in Mandarin language.

im English educated chinese guy and i dont know how to read or write but i know how to speak mandarin. what i afraid is that chinese language will be the international language soon as china is getting greater and better. i already feel upset that i dont know chinese and i heard from a friend said that chinese is getting popular so she gonna let his children to learn chinese in the future.

and i know some of u will say that i can still learn mandarin and etc but i dont have such time and such money to learn. it costs almost 0 per month to learn to write and read mandarin.
so, is it true? chinese/mandarin language will become the international language soon?

Any websites? Apparently, I need more internet friends to chat normal discussions. Most people who do talk to me are usually a friend or two and guys who I had some sexual history with (and its seriously awkward to talk to them when I have a boyfriend).

I usually go on the chatrooms in japancupid, or IRC (though no specific channels to go to anymore..)…
Its just that I hardly have anyone to talk to anymore. Most of my former bestfriends just walked away from me because they fell in love with me and I did not returned the feeling, and it became too awkward for them to even chat with me!

I’m a gamer too, so meeting ppl who r into games n recreational stuff helps too!
My bf thinks I’m desperate and I have no life (ie, he told me to go out with my friends or concentrate in school; that got me pissed), but its not true… I just don’t have many people to talk to.

But today I’m going downtown for a mandarin language gatherring, it might be interesting and I may meet new folks. But I still prefer an online talkative friend on msn or sumthing.

To punish my bf, I’m not gonna talk to him until sunday -__-;;;

I am an international business graduate student and I think it would be very helpful to learn the Mandarin language.

We need to write placards in Mandarin Language, as we are given to understand that any message in Mandarin Language will have more emphasis.

So how we write the following in Mandarin Language:

1. Tibet Du Li
2. Uyghurstan Du Li

Any thoughts on how can we make the message more emphatic?

BTW I know that Mandarin people in China speak Mandarin language, same as German people speak German language and French speak French Language.
