What language should I learn Mandarin or Russian?

I am wanting to learn another language, because I want to work for the government when I am older and knowing another language will help me in whatever field I plan on being in when I’m older. I am debating on russian or mandarin but can’t decide. My dad wants me to learn mandarin but I want to learn Russian. I know that china is rising to the number 1 super power and there are more then 700 million mandarin speakers in the world, but there are only about 250 million Russian speakers. what is your opinion?

I’m looking to buy a good Mandarin karaoke DVD for my dad, who is 57. He was born and raised Taiwan and moved here to the US 26-27 years ago. He loves singing karaoke so I thought a new karaoke DVD might make a good gift. He loves the classics, and the usual Chinese music typical 57-year-olds would like (though, please remember that he’s from Taiwan and not China). I can speak Mandarin, but I can’t read or write Chinese, and I was born and raised in the US, so I haven’t a clue which artists are famous, which songs are classics, or anything else, really. I was browsing eBay and found a few that looked promising, but have no idea if the artists or songs are known. I’ve gathered up some photos of one of the DVDs I’m interested in (including the song list). Can someone please take a look and let me know what you think? Any help would be appreciated.

I only have three years of school, and this year I wasted trying to learn French (a quickly made decision I have regretted). But I’ve always wanted to learn Mandarin, because of my fascination with chinese culture. But my dad says that I should learn Spanish because it’s so widely spoken. Plus, I want to learn it as well. I can learn two languages; would it be nigh impossible to learn both of these languages?
"?" I meant I only had three years of highschool left.

Learning Mandarin Hard or Easy?

When i was little (i’m cantonese and viet) i used to speak canto but when my grandma moved in with me, that language got replaced with viet so i dont remember any canto words but i do remember speaking it. i can speak english and viet and i’m in the process of learning spanish at school but I have an urge to learn mandarin. since my dad’s cantonese, he knows most mandarin words too so he’s been teaching me at home. do you think that since i used to speak canto when i was little could somehow boost my memory and help me speak mandarin?
Idk, i just have a huge question in my head but i can’t pinpoint to it -___- Oh & is it easy, hard, etc etc / any tips? 😀

Like really fluent.
My mum was a historian focusing on Pali
And my dad was a diplomat so I was taught the languages when we lived in the areas.
Now I’m in HS though and I can’t remember any of them.
I reall want to teach them to myself without Rosetta stone or whatever. Help?!?

I’m actually Chinese, but I barely know how to speak Mandarin. My grandmother happened to be Chinese, but somehow my dad was unable to learn it. I really don’t want to lose this ability. I know I’m sort of not making sense, but yeah. I really want to learn Mandarin, not only to prove my parent I can learn, but able to understand Taiwanese series. haha. I just want a site that is able to give me lessons for FREE. I really want Rosetta Stone, but it’s too expensive. Please help me out.

How long would it take to learn Cantonese and Mandarin?

I am asian and I was raised in a cantonese-speaking household, but did not live in an asian country. My cantonese was learned by listening to my parents. I can speak cantonese but my vocabulary is very limited.

I want to learn to improve my cantonese to a wider vocabulary and I want to learn mandarin as well in case I visit an asian country, or meet one of my dad’s friends I don’t want to not know what to say.

How long would it take to learn?

I know his dad’s from HK and his mom’s from Taiwan, and in everything I see of him, he speaks Mandarin…Does he speak Cantonese at all?

Just wonderin’ haha

Thanks! =)

One of my co-workers is a new dad and we wanted to print him a huge card to congratulate him and his wife on the occasion. He speaks mandarin (at least he speaks mandarin with our other Chinese co-workers) as well as English, and we wanted to spread our wishes as a group in both languages. We’re doing our best to keep it a surprise, which is why I’ve come to the internet for help–can anyone give me a non-google translate answer? :3

Taiwanese or mandarin translation please?

I don’t know the proper spelling so I’m going to spell it to how it sounds. I’m Taiwanese/American, but never had the chance to learn Mandarin or Taiwanese. When ever my mom get upset at someone she will call them a "chow cot soon". My dad always says it means something along the lines of dirty a**hole. Whenever I ask her what it means she just smiles. Thanks guys!
I’m not sure if it’s taiwanese or mandarin. The only other way I can try to spell it as it sounds is

"Chow caught sooon"
