What are some of the best resources to study Mandarin?

So far I am self-taught & NO schools within a 50mile radius offer any courses. However, I can speak some already & can read/write about 250 Han Yu so far. I listen to a lot of Chinese music & watch TW dramas but it seems like I can’t get any further in learning. I’m interested in hearing peoples stories of learning Chinese. Jia You! ^^v Xie Xie!

I’m looking to buy a good Mandarin karaoke DVD for my dad, who is 57. He was born and raised Taiwan and moved here to the US 26-27 years ago. He loves singing karaoke so I thought a new karaoke DVD might make a good gift. He loves the classics, and the usual Chinese music typical 57-year-olds would like (though, please remember that he’s from Taiwan and not China). I can speak Mandarin, but I can’t read or write Chinese, and I was born and raised in the US, so I haven’t a clue which artists are famous, which songs are classics, or anything else, really. I was browsing eBay and found a few that looked promising, but have no idea if the artists or songs are known. I’ve gathered up some photos of one of the DVDs I’m interested in (including the song list). Can someone please take a look and let me know what you think? Any help would be appreciated.

What's the best way to learn Mandarin Chinese on your own?

Hi, I am a college student, and I am almost done with my second semester of Mandarin Chinese. I really love it and want to learn more and hopefully become fluent some day.

Unfortunately, I won’t have time any more during college (except maybe summer of 2009) to take Chinese classes. That still leaves at least a year not taking Chinese class.

What is the best way to learn Chinese on your own? Should I buy the textbooks of the classes I can’t take and do them myself? Should I buy a computer program? Books from the bookstore? Should I watch Chinese TV? Listen to Chinese music? All of the above? More?

Haha, let me know! I really want to learn! Thanks in advance!
