Learn Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, or Hindi?

Please take the time to read the entire details area. I’m currently a double major in finance & accounting with a minor in hospitality management. I honestly don’t know what I am going to do yet but it is obviously going to have something to do with accounting and/or finance in a corporate environment and I want a language that will help me with getting and excelling at a job. I have the chance to study abroad in one of three places and I want to learn the language that corresponds. Here are the various choices and corresponding situations/details. Any well thought out advice is greatly appreciated.
-All three schools are well respected and advanced in education and I am getting a wealth of scholarships to help in funding a majority of costs.
1. Pondicherry, India @ IISAC https://www.semesterinindia.org/
– it will be easy to get course credit transfered from here, it is very affordable, their website is extremely informative, India is very dirty, . Most people in India speak English so Hindi may not be as much of an asset.
2. Shanghai, China @ ECNU https://english.ecnu.edu.cn/
-it will be more difficult to get credits transferred from here, very affordable, nice looking but not informative website, Shanghai is polluted. Mandarin seems to be the most in demand language and therefore would be the largest asset but take into account all the details and situations before you advise me to choose this.
3. Tokyo, Japan @ ICU https://www.icu.ac.jp/index_e.html
-I am hands down most interested in Japanese culture, great non polluted environment, fresh/healthy food, very expensive, very modern school, same difficulty in transferring credits as China, very informative website, Mandarin is also taught here. Japanese seems valuable as a language but not nearly as much as Mandarin and Hindi but the biggest factor at this school is that the school/living costs here are almost twice as expensive as the other two.

What are some of the best resources to study Mandarin?

So far I am self-taught & NO schools within a 50mile radius offer any courses. However, I can speak some already & can read/write about 250 Han Yu so far. I listen to a lot of Chinese music & watch TW dramas but it seems like I can’t get any further in learning. I’m interested in hearing peoples stories of learning Chinese. Jia You! ^^v Xie Xie!

I’m asking in the case of if:

1. He likes her/finds her cute
2. He does not speak, or speaks minimally, the language of the girl

Eg Japanese guy to Chinese girl (she speaks mandarin and English and SOME Japanese whereas he only speaks Japanese; and maybe SOME English)

This seems like a silly/stupid question, but please answer it, in your perspective (if you’r a Japanese), or if you noticed something (trend or whatever) about Japanese guys.
@cheapest: I came across this couple of facebook, a black guy and a japanese girl, and they are married, the girl speaks broken english and the guy doesn’t seem to speak japanese at all. So that’s why im’ asking this Q.they get along well though.
@cheapest: hai, sou desu. i’m asking about japanese guy and chinese girl.

@threeday: you are right. i don’t want communication problems. all is well if i can find a jap guy that speaks good eng, or if i learn jap to a high level… 🙁 is your wife japanese? how about you, can you speak japanese? i’m just curious, but there isn’t a need to answer if you don’t wish to.

@anna & jdoramaking: would they still date someone if they couldn’t speak the language, even if the girl is asian? and er, as far as i know i dont think most jap guys can speak english…most average guys on the street don’t even understand english well enough to give the right answer. imho, though.

Any free online resources to learn Mandarin?

I’m looking for an online website to help me start learning Mandarin that is free. Completely free – no free trials, no learn a lesson but buy a book – just something free.

I use a website called talktomeinkorean.com & that is how I learned Korean – but now I’m trying to find a site just as effective like that one but for Mandarin. Anyone know of any websites?

Mandarin Chinese,Korean,Japanese,Hebrew,Spanish,French & German. What would be the best one to learn first ?

English to Chinese translation (simplified and wade giles please, pinyin could help) (Mandarin & Cantonese please)

I work at this little wine shop and have a lot of chinese speaking customers, we have a promotion where if you buy any 6 bottles of wines or spirits you may receive 10% off all the items but a nearly all of them believe it must be 6 of the same item, how can i say: "If you buy six or more all of them are 10% off" "any six are 10% off" "you can mix and match" and "they don’t have to be the same" I would like to have this written down so they can read it and also in wade giles so that i can say it, i am begining to study chinese but i am far from proficient. So how can you say this in both mandarin and cantonese dialects, especially mandarin.

There’s a Chineseish song on Youtube and I don’t know its name. So in order to figure out the name I need to type in the lyrics on Google; but I can’t make heads nor tails of the spelling!

Unfortunately it goes with a Foot-binding video so if you’re squeamish, I suggest you scroll down the page and simple listen…

Should I learn Spanish or Mandarin?

I’m starting my first year of university next year and I’m going into "International Development & Globalization" (in short,, like international relations). I want to study either Spanish or Mandarin because I think it would definately benefit me in the future as I have the opportunity to study in another country later. Plus, what I’m really aiming for in the future is something to do with international journalism, travelling abroad. I don’t know if I should take Spanish because it is widely recognized in the world and there are a lot of issues in Spanish nations of South America. Or,,, Mandarin because China is an emerging superpower. I’ve always wanted to learn Spanish, but for my future I’m thinking that many world issues are going to involve China. By the way I live in Ontario, Canada now. Help please ?
Alot of my decision is based on my future too. I’m sorta leaning Mandarin because China is going to have such a world impact and I might have opportunities there

Learning Mandarin Hard or Easy?

When i was little (i’m cantonese and viet) i used to speak canto but when my grandma moved in with me, that language got replaced with viet so i dont remember any canto words but i do remember speaking it. i can speak english and viet and i’m in the process of learning spanish at school but I have an urge to learn mandarin. since my dad’s cantonese, he knows most mandarin words too so he’s been teaching me at home. do you think that since i used to speak canto when i was little could somehow boost my memory and help me speak mandarin?
Idk, i just have a huge question in my head but i can’t pinpoint to it -___- Oh & is it easy, hard, etc etc / any tips? 😀

I am Chinese myself. But I never learned how to read & write Chinese because I never went to Chinese school (I live in an English speaking country). I speak rudimentary Cantonese (but my parents also speak fluent Hakkanese and a bit of Mandarin).

I’d like to learn how to at least read and write Chinese.. since it’d be something useful.

So are Chinese characters the same regardless of whether you speak Cantonese, Mandarin, Hakkanese, etc?

I studied Korean on a very good, efficient site called "talktomeinkorean" & they even had things such as youtube videos, online teachers who were available to talk with any time, etc.

I’m wondering if they have a site similar to this, that is very efficient & teaches Chinese (Mandarin) very well.

I can’t take classes around where I live because they do not provide any.

Simple Mandarin movies, to learn Mandarin?

I am learning Mandarin, and I am almost finished with my Book-CD set:

https://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Chinese-Mandarin-Beginner-Intermediate-Basic-Intermed/dp/1400021030/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-4514724-4297765?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1191498027&sr=8-1

I would like to watch a Mandarin movie that will allow me to learn more Mandarin from the dialog. I want to select a Mandarin movie with a very SIMPLE dialog that is easy to understand.
Do you think the the movie "Together" (link below) is simple enough? I looks like a simple and beautiful movie:

What's The Easiest Way To Learn Mandarin Chinese?

My family is moving to Taipei,Taiwan next year because that’s were most of my family live`s. I’m full Taiwanese. My mom & dad didn`t get around to teaching me & my brother so I wanted to know if anyone can give me some tips or something because my mom & dad are to busy to teach me and my brother.

& please don`t recommend a site were you have to pay for a program.

Thanks. =]

Well I’m 100% chinese but I don’t know how to speak anything but 3 phrases. I have the option taking either a mandarin or cantonese class[not both tho]. I have a few chinese friends and they all know cantonese so it would be cool to be able to talk to them in cantonese but my family understands mandarin. Also, I heard that mandarin is good so you can use it to communicate to people from all different areas.

Which should I learn? Pros&Cons? [I definitely can’t choose both. The classes are at the same time so that would be impossible]

Bad Mandarin translation, please help.?

According to a text book, this pinyin;

"Lǐ, nǐ bāng wǒ jiào ba."

should be translated in English as;

A) "Li, why don’t you order".

Let me give you the context: two guys are at a restaurant. One of them can’t decide what to tell the waiter, so he tells his friend (Li) to just go ahead and order, thus "Lǐ, nǐ bāng wǒ jiào ba."

But I think it would be best translated into English as:

B) "Li, help me order"

Do you think sentence A is correct or sentence B?

***

Also,

I think that there is something wrong with this pinyin sentence:

"Nǐmen xiǎng diǎn shénme?" supposedly it means "You want to order something", but "diǎn" =/= "order"…if you don’t believe me look at this link:

https://www.yellowbridge.com/language/wordsearch.php?searchMode=Pt&word=di%C7%8En&select=whole&search=Search

So, if we want to translate "You want to order something" is should be:

"Nǐmen xiǎng jiào shénme?" in other words, replace "diǎn" with "jiào", am I correct??

Thank you to all the native-Mandarin answerers for sharing the adventure that is your language.

Anyone speak/write Mandarin or Cantonese (or both?)?

I am looking for someone who speaks fluent Cantonese and/or Mandarin to help me out from time to time i.e. I’d email you, asking for help. I speak pretty good Canto and am learning Mando. You would need to be fluent in English too, and if you can write Chinese, even better… please answer with your details or PM me them if you feel you can do it =]
Please and thank you ^^

Some background (you dont have to read this):
I am a British-Born Chinese; Cantonese is my mother tongue but sadly I am not as fluent as I would like to be. My conversational skills are strong and improving all the time, but having grown up overseas my grasp of the language is otherwise abit.. loose. >.<" e.g. I cannot translate Cpop songs, I would not understand a science lesson taught in Canto.
From TWDramas & my mum & Chinese classes, I have picked up some Mandarin but my understanding is still very basic.
I can only write about 20-30 words, if that!!
Oh, and if anyone has any good links or tips… would be great (Y)
Cheers~

I need to have popular communication phrases in chinese character, followed by english so I can point to the phrase and my chinese coworkers can see what I’m saying. I’d love to simply talk with them – you know, to be able to say "hello" and "please" and "thank you" at the very least… I don’t even need to know how to pronounce each phrase…not just yet! Any resource you may know of would be appreciated! thanks!
