Learn to Speak Mandarin Archives

I am looking for anyone to do what the title above says.

Via skype or shared talk

I´d be honoured to teach you Portuguese or help you with English in exchange for Mandarin. I really want to learn that language 🙂
Dude I didn´t know it was against the rules but hey, in some answers people offend is that allowed? 、、、

I have to do a report for chinese on a mandarin character that has some interesting etymology/history. Any ideas? I kinda wanted to do a character that talked about a typical chinese food, but i’m open to any suggestion.

I am not chinese and must learn it to talk to people I do things with.

So far, I’ve only met THREE Chinese guys who could CLEARLY UNDERSTAND both Cantonese and Mandarin and can speak both languages fluently. The rest are like, "What? What did he say?" (my friend’s translation.)

Learning Mandarin in 4 years?

Hello. My name is Raj Patel and I live in the UK. I want to go to medical University in China but I have to learn mandarin in 4 years. How hard is it to learn mandarin and is there a realistic chance that I can actually talk and write mandarin with 4 years because I don’t want to go there if I know its going to be very difficult to learn. How many hours would I have to put it to learn mandarin?

How to handle noisy neighbor in the morning?

I am currently in a residential neighborhood that’s been pretty quiet. Recently, though, one of the neighbors (we’re back to back so I’m not completely sure where the noise is coming from) has either the TV or radio on in the mornings–think around 7-8:30 AM.

It sounds like a Mandarin news or talk show. The volume is LOUD: I can hear it through my closed window. I think this person has the window or doors open perhaps while getting ready for the day or to perhaps to hear over the noise of the household or cooking or something.

It’s really obnoxious, but I don’t want to go outside and start screaming at them to shut up. I was thinking of writing an anonymous letter, but I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions.

How did you learn Chinese (Mandarin)? SELF STUDY?

I took a class but that was for one sem. I believe that I have enough initiative to learn it by meself.
HOW did you learn? Ho you have any tips? Sites? Books?
Or Do I really need an instructor? 🙂

How much Mandarin will I learn in one year?

At my college, you need to take a main language course (Spanish, German or French) for two years and a side language for one year.

I’m probably going to take Spanish, but I really want to learn the Mandarin. The first term is Chinese I and the second term is Chinese II.

If I take both courses, will I learn alot of Mandarin? Also, will my Spanish courses get in my way?
I already listen to Chinese audio lessons, and when I’m at work, I’ll go over the lessons in my head 😛

New Cousin My Aunt Is Adopting From China Agian.. Help?

My aunt has decided to adopt from china agian, after adopting a baby girl Sophie back in 06, but she was only about a little over a year when they got her (she turned 4 in june) Everything went as smooth as possible, and she adapted very well. She learned English as her primary language, so the language barrier was not a problem. However, the little boy Jax my aunt is going through the process of adopting right now, has just turned 7 and knows no english that we know of. They have just began the adoption basically, just sending in his care package not even 3 weeks ago. So, there might be another year ahead. If so, he’d be 8, and it would be harder for him to learn English, and learn the customs and get used to life.
Any parents who have had a similar situation to this who would like to send some tips?
And the whole family is using rosetta stone to learn mandarin, to help talk to him

Learn Chinese (Mandarin), Japanese, or Hindi?

Please take the time to read the entire details area. I’m currently a double major in finance & accounting with a minor in hospitality management. I honestly don’t know what I am going to do yet but it is obviously going to have something to do with accounting and/or finance in a corporate environment and I want a language that will help me with getting and excelling at a job. I have the chance to study abroad in one of three places and I want to learn the language that corresponds. Here are the various choices and corresponding situations/details. Any well thought out advice is greatly appreciated.
-All three schools are well respected and advanced in education and I am getting a wealth of scholarships to help in funding a majority of costs.
1. Pondicherry, India @ IISAC https://www.semesterinindia.org/
– it will be easy to get course credit transfered from here, it is very affordable, their website is extremely informative, India is very dirty, . Most people in India speak English so Hindi may not be as much of an asset.
2. Shanghai, China @ ECNU https://english.ecnu.edu.cn/
-it will be more difficult to get credits transferred from here, very affordable, nice looking but not informative website, Shanghai is polluted. Mandarin seems to be the most in demand language and therefore would be the largest asset but take into account all the details and situations before you advise me to choose this.
3. Tokyo, Japan @ ICU https://www.icu.ac.jp/index_e.html
-I am hands down most interested in Japanese culture, great non polluted environment, fresh/healthy food, very expensive, very modern school, same difficulty in transferring credits as China, very informative website, Mandarin is also taught here. Japanese seems valuable as a language but not nearly as much as Mandarin and Hindi but the biggest factor at this school is that the school/living costs here are almost twice as expensive as the other two.

Keep in mind, I’ve had to do all of my Mandarin learning online, or by listening to DVD’s in Mandarin.

I’m serious, what’s the best way to learn to read simplified Chinese Characters. I realize it will take a lot of effort and time.

Thank you for any reasonable answers.

Is there an official language in Hong Kong for now? what’s it?

Program to quickly learn Mandarin Chinese fluenty?

I am looking for a program where I can learn to speak Mandarin Chinese fluently in a short time period (up to six months or so). I’m currently in college but don’t have time to take Mandarin classes and want to explore the alternatives. I once talked to to someone who became fluent in a program after only six months. Does anyone have any knowledge of these programs or links to their websites? I’m not talking about study abroad, but something entirely different. My college has abroad programs, but they also include reading and writing and don’t reach the same level of speaking fluency.

Should i learn Mandarin or Japanese?

I have put quite a bit of thinking into this and i factors the reasons why i should learn both languages.

-I’m thinking of having a career in east asia
-My mother is chinese

When my family and I talk in Chinese, we refer to all Hispanics as Mexicans. That’s what I was taught. Is there a word for "Hispanics"?
What word/phrases do you use to refer Hispanic people in Chinese(Mandarin or Cantonese)?

What language should i learn?

I’m taking a language class in school, and we have six languages we can learn from.

– Italian

– Spanish

– Mandarin Chinese

– Japanese

– German

– French

I’m leaning toward German, because my mom speaks it and i think it would be cool if we could talk in German to each other XD

But what’s your opinion?

Should I learn Mandarin or Japanese?

I know that I want to learn one of these languages, but I don’t know which one to choose.

I take french in high school, but I also want to learn Mandarin from a separate class. If I take on Mandarin at the same time, will it mess up what I was taught in french or vice versa?

My tutor reckons it’d help.. preferably ones with simple chinese and translations. Would be great. Thanks!

What is the best way to learn Mandarin Chinese?

Besides immersion or going to China, in addition to regularly meeting with a learning group, I am looking for some reasonable at home study options. I have heard that Rosetta Stone for Chinese does not really work so well, but I am looking for the most natural way to study Chinese. Has anyone found success with a certain method?

I can’t really read the chinese characters in the online articles that talk about him (they’re all in traditional Mandarin). I was wondering if someone can talk about him in fluent English.

…seeing that China will dominate the 21st. century, thoughts?

Should I learn Irish or Mandarin?

For various reasons, I have already started both. I can do basic greetings and numbers, and what not. I even used some of my Mandarin in China a few months ago as an independent traveler. But I also really want to learn Irish (I have an opportunity for free courses with a small group of people).
I will probably do both, so my question is more of a "which one should I learn first?"
